Blaine senior Jessica Summers verbally committed to the University of Idaho women's basketball team Sunday night.

Summers, a two-time North Cascades Conference player of the year and an all-state post last season, said she will sign a letter of intent on Nov. 12, the national signing day, to attend the Division I-A school.

"I've wanted to play college basketball since I was little," Summers, 17, said. "I'm really happy with Idaho. The girls are really nice and the coach is a good guy."

She visited Idaho a month ago and also made a trip to the University of Portland, in addition to receiving high interest from like University of the Pacific and Santa Clara University, both of which are Division I-A schools. Summers, 6-foot-1, was also heavily recruited by Western Washington University.

Blaine coach Patrick Green said Summers is the first Borderites' girls' basketball player to play at a Division I-A school as a freshman. Heather Ridnour, a 1997 Blaine graduate, played at Eastern Washington University after spending two seasons at Spokane Community College.

Summers will play post for Idaho (10-18 overall, 8-8 Big West Conference last season) and doesn't plan to redshirt. The Vandals run a motion offense, which features the Kansas secondary break, and plays man-to-man defense, Green said. The coach said Summers would have some learning to do when she arrives at Idaho.

"She is going to have some growing pains with some of the fundamental things they're going to want her to do," Green said. "They run offensively, but she's fast for a 4 (power forward) or 5 (center) and can get up and down the court."

Summers said Idaho started recruiting her after other schools and only got involved after Rob Ridnour, the former Blaine boys' basketball coach, contacted the Vandals.

"We knew they were looking for a post and Mr. Ridnour talked to them," said Summers, who plans to major in elementary education. "It worked out and I couldn't be happier."
